Valhalla Vineyards, Winery in Roanoke County, Virginia, US
Valhalla Vineyards is a winery perched at 600 meters elevation in Roanoke County with a large property where only a portion is planted with vines. The facility features an underground cave used for winemaking and serving wine tastings.
The winery was established in 1994 and its founding couple created an underground production facility. The first vintage reached the market in 2000.
The name draws from Norse mythology and appears in wines like the Götterdämmerung blend. Visitors encounter various grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Viognier that reflect the winery's commitment to different flavor profiles.
Tastings are available on Saturdays from April through December when visitors can sample multiple wines. The site is easily accessible and the cellar facilities are open to guests.
Winemaking uses an innovative gravity system where grapes flow directly through openings in the roof into the underground cellar. This design merges traditional vineyard methods with modern engineering.
