Weingut Wittmann, Organic winery in Westhofen, Germany
Weingut Wittmann is a VDP-certified organic winery in Rheinhessen that works about 28 hectares of vineyard land. The estate draws on distinct vineyard sites around Westhofen, including Morstein, Aulerde and Kirchspiel, to produce wines that reflect the character of each location.
The property began as a leasehold in 1663 under the Electoral Palatine, though the family did not start bottling their own wines until 1921. This shift marked the start of the winery as an independent business.
The Wittmann family practices biodynamic methods that blend traditional rhythms of viticulture with careful attention to soil health and biodiversity. This approach shapes how the vineyard operates today and reflects values rooted in the German wine region.
The winery offers tastings and tours of its production facilities where visitors can see how wines are made and the equipment used. Bottles can be purchased on-site or through their website, making it easy to order from home as well.
The soils across different vineyard sites contain chalky limestone and red slate, giving each area distinct mineral qualities that shape the wines. This natural variety allows the winery to produce wines with noticeably different taste profiles from one location to another.
