Amalthea Cellars, Winery in Atco, New Jersey, United States.
Amalthea Cellars is a winery in Atco that grows and produces wines from grapes sourced in the Southern New Jersey Outer Coastal Plain region. It uses traditional methods alongside modern techniques to create various wines including Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah.
The winery's story began in 1976 when the first vines were planted on the property. It opened to the public five years later in 1981 after establishing its vineyards and production capabilities.
The name comes from Amalthea, a moon of Jupiter, linking winemaking to science and classical mythology. This choice reflects how the winery blends traditional craft with a broader perspective on the world.
The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday for visitors to sample wines. It is worth checking ahead about any special tours or events, as these can add depth to the visit.
The winery is the only one in New Jersey growing Rayon d'Or, a specialized white hybrid grape variety developed in France. This rare variety makes it a special destination for wine lovers seeking uncommon grape types to explore.
