Resurrection Mary, Apparition site along a road in Illinois, US
Resurrection Mary is a phenomenon along Archer Avenue between Willowbrook Ballroom and Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, Illinois, where drivers report seeing a female figure in a long white dress. The apparition appears mostly at night when the road is dimly lit and few other vehicles are around.
Encounters with this nighttime figure were documented starting in the 1930s after several people came forward with similar experiences to local authorities. The name came from the proximity to Resurrection Cemetery, where the apparition is regularly seen.
Local drivers and residents have shared stories about this nighttime figure for decades, describing encounters with a young woman in a white ballgown standing at the roadside. Many say she asked for a ride before vanishing without a trace once the car reached the cemetery gates.
The stretch of road can be driven at night, with the area between the ballroom and the cemetery covering roughly two kilometers. Visibility is best in clear weather and without heavy oncoming traffic.
In 1976, handprints were discovered on the iron fence of the cemetery that looked as if they had been burned into the metal. Some witnesses believe the prints came from someone trying to bend the bars apart.
