Big Round Top, Hill on the Gettysburg Battlefield, Pennsylvania, US.
Big Round Top is the highest point on the Gettysburg Battlefield, covered with dense forest and large boulder formations. The slopes are reached through established hiking trails that connect to the National Military Park road network.
In July 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine Regiment secured this strategic position against Confederate troops. The fighting for this hill proved decisive for the outcome of the entire battle.
The hill is marked with monuments and plaques that honor the soldiers who fought in this crucial Civil War engagement. These memorials show how significant this location remains in the nation's memory and historical identity.
The climb requires sturdy footwear due to rocks and uneven paths; surfaces can become slippery after rain. Allow enough time for the hike and bring water, as facilities at the top are limited.
At the summit stand the remains of a 19th-century observation tower foundation built from granite blocks brought to the site specifically for this purpose. These stones quietly mark early efforts to document the historic terrain.
