Bay Creek Wilderness, Wilderness area in Shawnee National Forest, Illinois, US
Bay Creek Wilderness is a protected forested area within Shawnee National Forest spanning thousands of acres with hardwood groves, natural streams, and limestone bluffs. The landscape features mostly unmarked paths and remains largely undeveloped to preserve its natural character.
The Illinois Wilderness Act of 1990 established this protected area as one of seven designated wildlands within Shawnee National Forest. The designation came after the region had been used for farming and logging for many decades.
The wilderness maintains strict preservation protocols, prohibiting motorized equipment and mechanical transportation to protect its natural state and ecological values.
No permits are required for hiking or camping in this wilderness, but visitors should carry physical maps since trails are poorly marked. Planning ahead and bringing navigation tools help ensure safe travel through the undeveloped landscape.
The creek that gives the wilderness its name flows through and creates dramatic waterfalls like Burden Falls along its course. These waters connect directly to the nearby Bell Smith Springs National Natural Landmark, making the two areas geologically linked.
