Westbrook, City in Cumberland County, Maine, United States
Westbrook is a city located west of Portland that spreads across multiple residential neighborhoods connected by the Presumpscot River. The city blends suburban and more rural areas within its bounds.
The area was originally called Saccarappa and became known for logging and later paper and textile mills that drew workers and investment. These industries shaped how the town expanded and what it became.
The town's identity is rooted in manufacturing traditions that shaped how it developed and what people built here over generations. You can see this heritage reflected in the layout of neighborhoods and the types of businesses that remain.
The town center is easy to navigate, with local government services available at the main municipal location where you can get maps and local information. The river offers opportunities for outdoor activities and walking paths along its banks.
On cold winter days, a rare natural ice disk can occasionally form on the Presumpscot River, creating an unusual sight that draws local and regional attention. This phenomenon happens only under very specific temperature and water conditions.
