The county occupies Virginia's Piedmont region with gently rolling terrain and a mix of small towns and rural areas. The town of Appomattox functions as the administrative center for local government.
The county was established in 1845 from portions of neighboring territories and took its name from a local family. The area became known for an important Civil War event that took place in a house in the county.
