Municipal Borough of Leigh, Former municipal district in Lancashire, England
The Municipal Borough of Leigh was an administrative district in Lancashire comprising four townships: Pennington, Westleigh, Bedford, and part of Atherton. It was governed by a mayor, eight aldermen, and twenty-four councillors organized across eight wards.
The area gained urban district status in 1894 and was elevated to municipal borough status in 1899. It operated as an independent local authority until 1974, when it was merged into the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan.
The Town Hall, completed in 1907, served as the focal point for local governance and civic life in the community. This building represented how the municipality expressed its identity and importance through a distinctive public structure.
The district was divided into eight wards that shaped its local administration. For those interested in exploring this history today, information about the borough's governance structure can be found through local archives and the former Town Hall.
The borough received its official coat of arms on December 23, 1899, bearing the Latin motto 'AEQUO PEDE PROPERA', meaning 'Hasten steadily'. This motto reflected the ambition and forward momentum of a growing industrial community.
