Berwyn range, Mountain system and conservation site in Powys, Wales
The Berwyn Range is a mountain system and conservation site in Powys, Wales, with extensive moorlands and grasslands. The area features several prominent peaks and is dominated by heather and acidic grass species, creating natural habitats for specialized plants and animals.
The area held early military significance and played a role in Welsh defense strategies against invaders. Its remote location made it a key passage in the medieval landscape of the region.
The name reflects Welsh geographical terms, describing the land's physical features in local language. Today, the moorland use and management still show how people have shaped this landscape over generations.
Access is best made on foot via various marked routes from the base of the mountain system. Visitors should expect changeable weather and bring appropriate clothing and equipment.
A standing stone near the summit between two adjacent peaks was carefully restored in the 2000s. This restoration made it a notable example of hands-on preservation work in the open landscape.
