The institution was established in 1800 and opened the first medical school in England in 1825. These steps marked the beginning of formalized surgical training in the kingdom.

The building serves as a training ground for surgeons from around the world and houses collections of anatomical specimens documenting centuries of medical practice. Among the exhibits are historical instruments and preparations offering insights into surgical methods over time.

The facility offers continuing education programs, certification examinations, and research opportunities for medical professionals. Visitors should inquire in advance about access conditions, as certain areas are restricted to professional staff.

The Grade II* listed building contains specialized laboratories where surgeons refine techniques using simulation technology and anatomical preparations. These facilities enable realistic training without involving living patients.
