Oban distillery, Whisky distillery in Oban, Argyll and Bute, Scotland

Oban distillery is a whisky-making facility located at the edge of Scotland's West Highlands, where the coastal position and maritime climate affect the production process. The operation employs wooden stills and local spring water to create its spirits.

This distillery was founded in 1794 by Hugh and John Stevenson, making it one of Scotland's oldest continuously operating whisky producers. Over more than two centuries, it has remained a steady part of the region's economic life.

The production here follows centuries-old Scottish methods, using wooden stills and local spring water in modest quantities. Visitors can see how these traditional practices shape the daily rhythm of the distillery's operations.

The location sits just a short walk from Oban train station, making it straightforward to reach on foot. Plan for potentially wet and windy weather typical of coastal areas, and wear appropriate footwear for moving around the grounds.

The casks used here come from both America and Europe, creating a flavor profile that blends influences from different traditions and is shaped by the seaside location. This combination of barrel types gives the spirits a character less commonly found elsewhere.
