Delaware County, County in Pennsylvania, United States
Delaware County is a home rule county in the Philadelphia region of Pennsylvania and covers 49 separate municipalities spread across roughly 476 square kilometers (184 square miles). The county seat is in Media, where administrative offices and courthouses are based.
The area was separated from Chester County in 1789 after Swedish, Dutch, and English settlers established communities here during the 17th century. Industrial growth during the 19th century transformed the landscape with factories and shipyards along the waterways.
Several historic town centers preserve buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries that still shape how neighborhoods appear today. Public libraries and parks serve as meeting spots where locals gather, while smaller theaters host performances for community audiences throughout the year.
The county administration offers online services for voter registration, health information, and contacts for municipal offices. Visitors can find resources on the official website for permits, property tax inquiries, and other public services.
The lowest point in the entire state of Pennsylvania sits on the Delaware River at Marcus Hook, roughly 10 feet (3 meters) above sea level. This spot marks the transition between river and tidal estuary, where the water begins to feel the influence of the ocean tides.
