British Geological Survey, Government geological agency in Nottingham, United Kingdom
The British Geological Survey is a government agency in Nottingham that studies the structure and composition of the ground beneath us. The organization provides maps, databases, and rock samples to explain the geological conditions across the United Kingdom.
The agency was founded in 1835 and was the first geological survey institution of its kind in the world. Over the decades, it went through several name changes and mergers before taking its current name in 1984.
The British Geological Survey contributes to how people understand the landscape around them beyond just scientific circles. The organization's work allows citizens to explore their local geology and learn what the ground beneath their homes is made of.
The agency offers free access to digital maps, databases, and reports through its OpenGeoscience platform. Visitors can ask questions by email or phone and receive information about local geological conditions and hazards like sinkholes or flooding.
Under the leadership of Karen Hanghøj since 2019, the agency became the first major research institution of its kind to be led by a woman. This reflects the organization's growing commitment to supporting women in the earth sciences, building on its history of pioneering female geologists.
