Tyrnyauz, Mining settlement in Elbrussky District, Russia
Tyrnyauz is a mining town situated at 4,300 feet (1,310 meters) altitude in the Baksan valley within Elbrussky District, roughly an hour's drive from Mount Elbrus. The settlement lies along the main highway toward the mountain, surrounded by steep slopes and glacier streams of the Caucasus.
The village was established in 1934 following the discovery of tungsten and molybdenum ore deposits in the valley. Granted city status in 1955, it grew into a key mining center during the Soviet era.
Tyrnyauz draws its name from the Balkar language and means roughly 'quick place', reflecting how the river rushes through the valley. Local residents celebrate both Russian and Balkar traditions, with daily life blending languages, foods, and customs.
The town sits along the main road to Mount Elbrus and serves as a resting stop for travelers heading to higher camps. Basic shops and lodging offer supplies for anyone planning a longer stay in the mountains.
Major mudslides in July 2000 reshaped several neighborhoods and triggered large-scale rebuilding work. The events left a visible delta in the layout and taught the community new lessons about living with mountain hazards.
